Transfer Experience - Undergraduate Student Experiences

Spotlight: Vince Yanni

Year: Senior - transfer student

Major: Mechanical Engineering

Transfer Experience

Making the switch to Drexel and into Engineering was very worthwhile and a pleasant experience for me.  My credits transferred over relatively easily, and I received helpful advising which enabled me to still finish my education in 5 years.

Why did you choose Drexel University?

I liked the idea of spreading out my education over 5 years. This provided more time for me to enjoy college life, as well as providing me with time to make money to pay for my education.

What made you choose Mechanical Engineering as a major?

Good teachers, co-op opportunities, and starting salary after graduation.

Are you a member of any engineering organizations?

I participate in the MEM Advisory Board, ASME, and Pi Tau Sigma.

My first Co-op

Where: Cape May County Municipal Utilities Authority, Cape May Court House, NJ

Title: Operations Co-Op

Living at the beach was the best part of this co-op, but I also got to learn a lot about public utilities, particularly wastewater treatment plants.

Responsibilities:

  •  Helped implement a new inventory system, Maximo, into widespread use

  • Examined mechanical drawings and visited Municipal sites for missing information to add to new database

  • Researched and inventoried RBC units, motors, pumps, and gear reducers for the treatment plants servicing Ocean City,      Avalon/Stone Harbor, Wildwood and Cape May

My Second Co-op

Where: Johnson & Johnson: McNeil Consumer and Specialty Pharmaceuticals, Fort Washington, PA

Title: Process Engineering Co-op.

The pharmaceutical industry continues to grow even in this slow job market, and I learned a lot from this excellent co-op.

Responsibilities:

  • Managed projects related to installing new and upgraded equipment and systems

  • Led meetings with cross-functional groups to determine project requirements

  • Estimated capital equipment installation and qualification costs

  • Coordinated and scheduled line time with engineering staff, plant managers, mechanics, and vendors

  • Wrote and executed Installation/Operational Qualification Protocol documents

  • Aided in the completion of a six sigma green belt certification project aimed at reducing aclar waste
