I chose Drexel because the co-op program was most appealing to me. Mechanical engineering, of all the disciplines engineering offers, was my first choice because it touches upon every field in engineering and exposes me to many different experiences.
I am currently involved with ASME at Drexel as well as ASME National. I am the chair of ASME at Drexel and I am the Region III Student Section Committee Representative (SSC Rep). ASME National divides the US into 12 regions, each of which have an SSC Rep. Region III comprises of 5 states and 45 universities (PA, NJ, DE, MD, and NY).
Being involved with ASME at Drexel got me started on a path I never thought I’d be on and looking back I must say I’m glad I made the decision to be involved. I’ve met many people in very high positions, made some great friends, learned a whole lot about leadership and time management, and most importantly I had a blast doing it. People go to school to better themselves and get an education so they live a comfortable lifestyle. With that being said I must say the number one benefit to joining ASME is the networking opportunities ASME has to offer which gives you an edge when looking for that job because you can say you’re different from any mechanical engineer. All of us in the MEM department will have an ME degree eventually. So what makes you stand out from the other guy sitting next to you besides your GPA? I have had my own experiences as well as seen many people who are involved take precedence in the real world when looking for a career to pursue. Experiences like these are priceless and like I said, I’m glad I decided to get involved early on in my education.
