Dear Prospective Undergraduate Student,
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics at Drexel University.
In recent years, the role of the mechanical engineer in today's society has experienced rapid changes. Advances in manufacturing, transportation, infrastructure systems, materials, communications, and high-performance computing have introduced new demands, opportunities, and challenges for mechanical engineers. At Drexel, mechanical engineering education emphasizes engineering-first concepts, diverse interdisciplinary skills, and professional development. The MEM department provides an innovative and flexible curriculum, offering students the opportunity to choose a concentration in six diverse areas: Aerospace, Biomechanical Engineering, Design and Manufacturing, Mechanics and Structures, Systems and Control, and Thermal Fluid Sciences.
This year marked the 100th anniversary of the Co-Operative education program in the United States. As one of the largest Co-Op universities in the country, we value the learning experiences and professional development that this component brings to our students. In addition to the experiential learning opportunities at leading companies such as Boeing, Honda, Lockheed-Martin, Johnson & Johnson, and DuPont, the Co-Op jobs provide, on average, more than $46,000 in stipends during the three 6-month cycles.
The MEM department encourages students to take advantage of the many opportunities that are available to them such as: double majors, minors, the honors program, concentrations, professional societies, and undergraduate research. Accelerated degree programs offer students the opportunity to earn a bachelor’s degree and an advanced degree in as little as five years; options include BS/MS, BS/PhD, BS/MD, BS/MBA and BS/JD.
I encourage you to come to visit Drexel University and the MEM department to meet our faculty, our students, and tour our laboratories. If you would like to schedule a visit or request more information about the program, please call the office 215.895.2352, or email me at mem@drexel.edu.
Sincerely,
Dr. Alan Lau
