PRESENTATIONS, AWARDS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dr. Brad Layton was an invited speaker at the Drexel University School of Medicine “Nanotechnology Meets Neuroscience” seminar on February 11, 2005.
MEM Department Welcomes Three New Faculty Members
Dr. Brad Layton spoke on February 15, 2005 at the Drexel University Department of Materials Sciences and Engineering “Micromanipulation, Nanomanipulation and Self-Assembly Limits of Structural Proteins” seminar.
Dr. Brad Layton will present "Towards a Method for Peripheral Nervous System Axonal Stiffness Measurements with MEMS –based Microgrippers," 2nd Annual IEEE-EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering, March 16-19, Arlington, VA.
Drs. J. Awerbuch, T.M. Tan, and A. Lau co-authored two papers presented at the Eighth Joint NASA/FAA/DOD Conference on Aging Aircraft, held 31 January –3 February 2005 in Palm Spring California. The papers were co-authored with Dr. J. Bakuckas of the FAA and their two Drexel-FAA fellows, Mr. A. Ahmed and Mr. B. Mosinyi. The first paper, entitled “Evolution of Multiple-Site Damage in the Riveted Lap Joint of a Fuselage Panel” was presented by A. Ahmed, reporting on the work performed at the FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center and at Drexel. The second paper entitled “Extended Fatigue Testing of High-Usage Aircraft Fuselage Structure”, reporting on a collaborative work with FAA Technical Center, Drexel, Delta airlines, and Sandia Laboratories, was presented by B. Mosinyi.
The 2005 Research Day Winners Announced, College of Engineering
The Drexel Student Chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) was awarded a $1500 Diversity Grant from the national chapter of ASME this spring. The proposal, authored by Dan Hanna (student President) and Dr. Paul Oh (advisor), describes a seminar series that celebrates and acknowledges the contributions of women to engineering.
Anand Pillarisetti, Waqas Anjum, Dr. Jaydev P. Desai, Dr. Gary Friedman, and Dr. Ari Brooks recently authored a paper titled “Force Feedback Interface for Cell Injection” that was invited to be presented as a long talk at the 2005 World Haptics Conference in Pisa, Italy. In addition, Gregory Tholey and

authored a paper titled “A General Purpose 7 DOF Haptic Interface” that was presented as a poster at this conference as well
Dr. Wei Sun, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Mechanics (MEM), was invited to present a seminar on “Computer-Aided Tissue Engineering” by the Department of Bioengineering at Rice University, Houston Texas on March 30, 2005.
Dr. Jaydev P. Desai has been invited to serve as a member of the special sub-committee on BioRobotics for the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference to be held in New York in September 2006.
Dr. Baki Farouk’s team received Honorable Mention for Senior Design Project 2004-2005 “Design of a Supercritical CO2 Reactor” with Ryan Blodgett,Ani Kechian, Leroy Sell, and Christopher Singleton.
Dr. Brad Layton served as the Advisor for Outstanding Freshman Design Project 2004-2005, “Design of a Portable Educational Atomic Force Microscope” with Rahul Singh, Vinay Gadia, Sristi Roy, Nischitha Venkatesh, Sagar Lunagaria, and Rohan Patel.
Dr. Alexander Dolgopolsky’s team received Honorable Mention for Freshmen Design Project 2004-2005
“An Artificial Vision System for the Blind” with Japkeerat Bindra, Stephen Massa, Charles Mccarthy, Joseph Neal, and Brian Piccione.
MEM Department Head, Dr. Mun Choi’s team received Honorable Mention for Freshmen Design Project 2004-2005 “Formula SAE Gear Indicator System” with Sam Acacia, Richard Castle, Harold Griest, Steven Seelman, and Jason Vala.
Dr. Paul Oh’s team received Honorable Mention for Freshmen Design Project 2004-2005 “Mechanical Advancement to Elevator Systems” with Team Members: Corey Dawson, Andrey Kolyada, Mudassar Malik, Christina Shank, and Sara Tubbs.
Dr. Brad Layton (MEM), Brian G. Jamieson and Stephanie M. Sullivan presented “A Micro-Fabricated Electrical-Impedance-Based In-Flight Hematology Analyzer” at the 3rd Annual Conference on Microchannels and Minichannels from June 13-15, 2005 in Toronto, Canada.
