A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute Gains Major Media Attention

The newly named A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute has recently been in the news headlines around the world.

A total of 14 students and 10 professors from the A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute were recently at the Gordon Research Conference on Plasma Processing Science (GRC-PPS) in Mt. Holyoke, South Hadley, MA from July 13th-July 18th, 2008. Dr. Alexander Fridman, MEM Professor and Director of the A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute, served as session chair on Plasmas in Biology and Medicine, of which the A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute presented three invited talks:  Biological Considerations of Applications of Plasma to Medical Systems, Dr. Donna Murasko, Department of Biosciences, Dean of College of Arts and Sciences, Drexel University; Wound Treatment with Cold Atmospheric Plasma, Dr. Eva Stoffels, Drexel University; Non-Equilibrium Plasma for Aerospace applications: Combustion and Flow Control, Dr. Andrei Starikovski, Associate Director, A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute, Drexel University.

The conference brought together leading authorities as well as beginning researchers, engineers and scientists, in the area of plasma processing science to exchange information and ideas concerning the most recent advances and future directions in this field. Invited speakers came from industry and universities in the US, Western Europe, and South East Asia.

The A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute received a new NSF Award focused on collaboration with University of Orleans, France on Plasma Medicine. Here is a new video of Dr. Alexander Fridman speaking about this on Live Morning TV News in Orleans, France.

The recently released Plasma Processes and Polymers journal from Wiley is a special issue of publications from the recent First International Conference on Plasma Medicine which took place in Corpus Christi, Texas. The Philadelphia Business Journal has also recently highlighted the creation of the A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute in a full-length special report entitled “Researchers’ Investigate Plasma’s Power to Heal”.  View the article here

Co-edited by Dr. Selcuk Guceri, Dean of the College of Engineering, and Dr. Alex Fridman, Director of the A.J. Drexel Plasma Institute and John Nyheim Chaired Professor of Mechanical Engineering, illustrate the fast-growing areas of plasma sterilization and decontamination.
