Two Outstanding MEM Undergrads Selected for Prestigious GEM Fellowship
Two outstanding Mechanical Engineering & Mechanics undergraduates were selected as winners of the 2005 GEM (Graduate Degrees for Minorities in Engineering and Science) Foundation Fellowship for Bridge Funding for MS/PhD Degrees.

Charles Avila (Junior, MEM) and Lloyd Henderson (1st yr Grad, MEM) have been greatly effected after receiving this fellowship. "I have to thank God for giving me this fellowship," said Avila. "Thanks to GEM and Drexel, I am able to expand my knowledge in Thermal Fluid Sciences, the area of Mechanical Engineering that I enjoy," said Henderson.

Both have been able to solidify their plans for progressing with their education and research. Avila plans to begin graduate school in the fall of 2006, leading to a PhD in the area of thermal fluid sciences. Although he is undecided on where to attend, he intends to focus his research in the areas of combustion and the development of internal combustion engines. Henderson plans to complete his Master's in Thermal Fluid Sciences at Drexel. He plans to work for a defense and technology services company, such as Lockheed Martin, where he hopes to design and analyze spacecraft and military components.

The GEM Fellowship programs were designed to increase the participation and amount of opportunities for underrepresented minorities at the master's and doctoral level in engineering and the sciences through paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance.
