Math and Science Partnership Returns to Drexel’s College of Engineering

The Math and Science Partnerships program, a partnership between the School District of Philadelphia and Drexel University, will return to the College of Engineering from July 31- August 11, 2006.

The program, led by Dr. Mun Y. Choi (MEM Department Head), Dr. Mary Jo Grdina (Professor in the School of Education), and Ms. Joanne Ferroni (Director of Outreach for MEM), is a partnership between the School District of Philadelphia, the College of Engineering and the Franklin Institute and is in it’s third year of funding.

Open to fifth and sixth grade middle school teachers, the two week summer program centers on teacher professional development in Land Forms and Solar Energy, and will prepare 30 science teachers for the first marking period content for the School District's new science curriculum. Drexel faculty and staff will provide grade-specific classes, labs and lectures related to the content, programs, and materials associated with the curriculum. Content instruction will take place both in the classroom and in teaching laboratories and teachers will be introduced to creative ways to incorporate engineering into their science curriculum.

A successful execution of this initiative would result in more teachers being classified as highly qualified, as defined in No Child Left Behind legislation. The ultimate goal is to set a precedent for significantly greater numbers of students scoring at the proficient level or above on the PSSA exams. Teachers will receive two graduate credits upon completion of the summer course.
