Pressurized Flow Reactor Facility (PFR)

The Pressurized Flow Reactor (PFR) Facility is designed to examine the oxidation of hydrocarbons in the low, intermediate and negative temperature coefficient regimes (600-1100 K), and pressures ranging from atmospheric to 20 atmospheres.  The basic experimental approach is to perform bench scale experimental studies on pure hydrocarbons and mixtures of hydrocarbons, including straight and branched chain alkanes, important alkenes, aromatics, and industry standard fuels. During an experiment, intermediate oxidation species are removed, identified, and quantified with various analytical techniques (GC, FTIR, and/or GC/MSD).  This work provides chemical information for the development of kinetic models to describe low and intermediate temperature hydrocarbon chemistry.  This information has potentially important applications to the ignition in diesel and gasoline engines, cold start capability in diesel engines, and engine emissions.

The Combustion Analysis Facility is designed to support of the analytical chemistry needs of several different research facilities.  The main focus is the identification and quantification of stable gas phase hydrocarbons and other by-products generated by various combustion processes.  A brief list of the analytical equipment is listed below:
